Jelly Bean Row

This is a row of brightly painted houses in St. John’s, Newfoundland. This was the subject for a Line and Wash watercolor demo by Paul Clark. He supplies the idea, a sketch, and a video of him painting while describing what he is doing. I really liked the relaxed feel of his demo and instructions as he goes along. Since Line and Wash is a style I want to learn, I will do a series of these painting.

This had the feel of paint by number once the inking was done. But though these are really flat fronts, there were shadows and variations in values. It was a chance to practice more with the wet-on0wet sky and pavement. All in all, a very satisfying exercise!
