Derelict Barn

Paul Clark based this Line and Wash Demo on a Derelict Barn image. He provided the sketch and taught the method as he was painting.

I love old barns and have wanted to paint ones I photograph in the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia countryside. These barns have served their purpose for generations. But as farms get bought and houses are built there, barns are town down. Then there are the farms that a family no longer can farm because the children are not interested in that life style. The giant farms with computer run machinery make these barns obsolete. I don’t want to see a whole life-style that has survived for hundreds of years forgotten.

As I get better at different styles of painting, you will see more of these farm buildings in my art work.

Perhaps this desire comes because I’m late in my 70’s. But it seems others have preserved their life styles and traditions and what they value in their art. This my be my way of carrying on the tradition.
